I spent last week in Hood River, Oregon at the Starboard dealer meeting and the AWSI demo.
I woke up early on Tuesday and met the guys from Starboard for a SUP dawn patrol from the Event Site. After spending the day Monday traveling, the morning Sup session was a great way to start the day.
After breakfast and a shower, it was back down to the river for the Starboard product presentation and an afternoon of product testing. Not much wind but we spent the afternoon hanging out at the Event Site and playing with the big boards and big sails. The Event Site in Hood River is a beautiful grassy area, and one of the most user friendly launches on the river. However, to get from the grassy area to the water you still need to cross a very rocky beach and then wade out on an equally rocky bottom before getting on the board.
Wednesday started with another early SUP session. We paddled up the Hood River a bit before being denied by shallow water and rapids. More product presentations followed by some wind and a good afternoon of sailing.
Thursday morning, myself and several other dealers were treated to breakfast and a tour of the Chinook factory. It was cool to watch them mold and assemble carbon booms, and some of the other windsurfing products they make. It makes the made in America sticker really mean something when you actually see it being done.
I spent the afternoon sailing several of the new 2010 Naish boards and sails. Awesome!
Friday was a beautiful day in the Hood, unfortunately there was absolutely no wind. Great day to demo SUP boards. I paddled from the Event site to the Hood River bridge a couple of times on different boards. A whole bunch of short spins (more foot abuse) , and then a long late afternoon paddle across the Columbia River to the White Salmon River. All in all, I paddled for more than 4 hours and I was a pooped paddler! I tried a lot of really good boards, but when all said and done, I really liked the Naish 12' Glide, but I still like my own 11'6 Naish better than anything. Cool! There was a big industry party Saturday night, but after a hot tub and a big bowl of pasta I was toast and crashed.
Saturday the wind was back, and I spent the final day of the demo re-riding the Naish and Starboard boards with a bunch of different sails. I met friends downtown for pizza Saturday night. Good pie, good friends, good day! Great trip!!

No Time To Surf (the Web)!
Aloha,
Sorry there have not been any updates in a while. Sometimes it is hard to spend time surfing the web and find time to actually surf too!
Between helping customers with cool new gear, the Tuesday night SUP Clinics, and just trying to get some board time ourselves, things have been pretty busy at East of Maui this summer. The shop is stocked with everything you need for your vacation or staycation, but it is going fast. Don't wait too long to grab that new board, some cool surf trunks, and a new pair of flops. Don't forget the rash guard, sunscreen and hat!
I have been nursing a bad back for the last month and a half, but have still managed to get some board time on my Naish and Laird SUP's in Annapolis Harbor. I even managed to get a short (but sweet) session windsurfing last night. I'm taking a yoga class next week to help out my back, and hopefully heading to the beach for more wind or surf in the near future.

Speaking of yoga, our long time friend and employee Lindsay Gonzales has been teaching yoga at Charm City Yoga in Fells Point. She will be doing a Women's Yoga Clinic and Surf Trip to the beach on July 26th. The cost is $75. Space is limited and reservations required. Check out www.poseandpaddle.com or call the shop.

Speaking of the beach, The 3rd Annual East of Maui Labor Day Luau is September 7th. The shop is closed and we are heading to Assateague. Bring your boards, your coolers, and something to throw on the grill. Low tide is late afternoon, so plan on making a day of it. For anyone wanting to make a night of it, there may be some go kart racing involved! Mark Saunder's turns the big 3-oh, on Sept 4th. Please bring him some Geritol ( or Birthday Cake) so he can made it though the day!
Have fun, see you on the water!

Happy New Year!
Aloha & Happy New Year.
Yesterday the East of Maui Crew celebrated the New Year at Ski Roundtop with the "Annual New Years Day Chili Party" . It is sort of like the Labor Day Luau, only colder. The shop is closed and it is one of the few days that we all get to play together at the same time.
The conditions were awesome and everything on the mountain was open except for Gunbarrel.
I made a huge pot of Chili ( Whitegrass Veggie Style) for lunch and we all chowed down before hitting the slopes for the rest of the afternoon.
Most of the crew headed home around dark, but Sarah, Mike Logston, and I rode until almost 7pm.
We had a great time and hope it is just one of many great days in 2009.
Chad and Puff Daddy air it out on New Years Day.
